Viola Bowen has the chance of a lifetime: to design a video game based on her all-time favorite book series. The only problem? Her co-lead is Jesse F-ing Andrews, a.k.a. her arch-nemesis. Jesse has made it abundantly clear over the years that he wants nothing to do with her–and Viola has no idea why.

When their bosses insist a wintery retreat is the perfect team-building exercise, Viola can't think of anything worse. Being freezing cold in a remote mountain lodge knowing Jesse is right next door? No, thank you.

But as the snow piles on, Viola discovers there's more to Jesse than she knew, and heat builds in more ways than one.

In this contemporary romance narrated by Kelsey Navarro Foster, professional rivals from two video-game companies must find common ground during a team-building retreat. Viola has no idea why Jesse dislikes her so much, but his past treatment of her has made the feeling mutual. When they must spend several wintry days together at a mountain lodge, she soon realizes that she has been mistaken. Foster's expressive delivery keeps listeners invested in Viola and Jesse's evolving relationship, audibly illustrating Viola's change from hating Jesse to realizing the misunderstanding between them and deciding to begin a relationship. Though secondary characters without defined characteristics are given generic voices that differ only with respect to gender, Foster's overall performance of this short romance is entertaining. Bestselling Hazelwood (Not in Love) offers a charming new audio-only novella set in the world of video gaming. Game developer Viola Bowen finally has a chance to work on a video game adaptation of one of her favorite book series. The only catch? She has to work with a rival developer, her archnemesis Jesse Andrews. Not only do they have to work together, but they'll be closer than ever, ensconced in a remote mountain lodge during a winter retreat. What's the worst that could happen? Narrator Kelsey Navarro Foster provides a well-paced performance, although she adopts a somewhat snarky tone that doesn't quite fit the novella's overall feel. Additionally, her character voices are a bit overdone, drawing attention to themselves in ways that may distract some listeners. Much like Hazelwood's other books, this story has a familiar style and plotline. Though fans of sizzling enemies-to-lovers romances will be pleased, some may find themselves wishing for a bit more depth. VERDICT Hazelwood's latest is witty, funny, and geeky in all the right ways. A quick listen for fans of Jillian Meadows's Give Me Butterflies or Hazelwood's own Love on the Brain.--Erin Cataldi
