Romance of the Three Kingdoms is a Chinese classic written by Luo Guanzhong in the 14th century. It depicts the rise and fall of Wei, Shu, and Wu, tracing the hundreds of years of history from the end of the Han dynasty to the unification of the Jin dynasty. The story reflects the political and military conflicts within and among the three kingdoms, as well as the sociopolitical circumstances of the time. Historical figures such as Zhuge Liang, Cao Cao, Zhou Yu, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei are all given new characterization. The orthodox historical view of supporting Liu and opposing Cao is consolidated, so is the importance of benevolent governance in accordance with Confucian thought. The story is a social critique of tyranny and war, demonstrating the people's wishes for wise leaders and social stability. This audiobook, narrated by Yuan Kuocheng, perhaps the most famous Chinese storyteller of the 20th century, is a special edition remastered in 2020.
